LJ in financial trouble? [Jan. 6th, 2009|07:55 am]
Ron Newman

A friend this morning called my attention to this Gawker news article: The Russian Bear Slashes a Social Network:

LiveJournal, the San Francisco-based arm of Sup, a Russian Internet startup, has cut about 20 12 of 28 employees — and offered them no severance

The company's product managers and engineers were laid off, leaving only a handful of finance and operations workers — which speaks to a website to be left on life support.

The Gawker article links to this LJ post by the fiancé of one of the laid-off LJ workers.

Since I just sprung for a Permanent Account during last month's sale, I'm quite displeased by this news. If anyone reading this has thoughts about how to archive a very active local LJ community, or how to migrate it to another service, I'm all ears. Someone pointed me at this Mac utility, but I haven't tried it yet.

Thanks. What I want to do is back up the davis_square community (where I'm one of the maintainers), not my private journal. Backing up both posts and comments is important. How would I do this?

antennapedia explains a method that appears to archive in a more orderly manner than the method I used above.

I can only suggest giving it a try and seeing what happens.

Otherwise, it will take cutting and pasting each comment entry into each journal entry. And that sounds like more work than creating tags.

I have to run but will be back later, perhaps with more answers if I can talk to people!

Use LJSM. Submit your username and password using the -u option and give your community name as the username to archive.

I did this. It downloaded all of davis_square but took several hours. Also, it doesn't unfold comments unless I use the -t switch to ship my username and password off to a Russian server -- something I'm not willing to do.

You do this every time you log into LiveJournal.

edit: Oh wait, that's the threader option. I see.

Well yeah, but I trust some random http://lj.setia.ru/threader/threader.php site less than I trust LJ.

(Also, aren't LJ's servers still located in the US?)

SUP owns LJ, Inc. LJ, Inc. owns the servers, so as far as I'm concerned, they're Russian.
