Blog Rally to help the Boston Globe

We have all read recently about the threat of possible closure faced by the Boston Globe. A number of Boston-based bloggers who care about the continued existence of the Globe have banded together in conducting a blog rally. We are simultaneously posting this paragraph to solicit your ideas of steps the Globe could take to improve its financial picture:

We view the Globe as an important community resource, and we think that lots of people in the region agree and might have creative ideas that might help in this situation. So, here's your chance. Please don't write with nasty comments and sarcasm: Use this forum for thoughtful and interesting steps you would recommend to the management that would improve readership, enhance the Globe's community presence, and make money. Who knows, someone here might come up with an idea that will work, or at least help. Thank you.

(P.S. If you have a blog, please feel free to reprint this item and post it. Likewise, if you have a Twitter or Facebook account, please add this url as an update or to your status bar to help us reach more people.)

LJ in financial trouble?

A friend this morning called my attention to this Gawker news article: The Russian Bear Slashes a Social Network:

LiveJournal, the San Francisco-based arm of Sup, a Russian Internet startup, has cut about 20 12 of 28 employees — and offered them no severance

The company's product managers and engineers were laid off, leaving only a handful of finance and operations workers — which speaks to a website to be left on life support.

The Gawker article links to this LJ post by the fiancé of one of the laid-off LJ workers.

Since I just sprung for a Permanent Account during last month's sale, I'm quite displeased by this news. If anyone reading this has thoughts about how to archive a very active local LJ community, or how to migrate it to another service, I'm all ears. Someone pointed me at this Mac utility, but I haven't tried it yet.

I'm permanent now

I took the plunge and bought a Permanent Account on the last possible day.

I don't really know what I'm going to do with LJ yet, but I expect to gradually figure out how to get my money's worth out of it.

Thanks to beowabbit for giving me a few months of Paid Account status earlier this year, so I could try out the service. After it expired a few days ago, I really missed having the "Expand" link and being able to edit my comments.
